吴玉田，山东齐河人，1939年8月生于山东济南。擅长中国画。1960年考入中国美术学院。1965年毕业于浙江美术学院中国画系。师从邓白先生攻读陶艺及国画，并得潘天寿诸大家入室指教。毕业后，蒙孙其峰、于希宁、吴冠中先生厚爱，悉心教诲，得其真髓。1972年倡导创办山东省轻工美术学校。1982年在山东轻工业学院创办艺术设计系，任系主任，教授。作品有《国风》、《玉堂春色》、《丰碑》等。作品《绿浓景更幽》入选2004年首届中国美术家协会会员中国画精品展。1999年在山东联合大学组建艺术设计学院，任院长。是我省艺术设计教育事业的开拓者和奠基人之一。
数十年来，其笔耕不缀，砺心图性、上下求索、广揽搏采，重视画外功夫，追求德艺双馨，其书画作品立意深邃，构图新颖，劲健挺秀，浑融朴茂，紧追时代。其论著有《新编山水画法》，《商标设计战略》等。90年代，《吴玉田画集》等专集陆续出版。作者已被《中国现代美术家名人大辞典》，《中国古今书法家辞典》，《中国工艺美术家辞典》，《中国教育家辞典》，《现代中国画史》等多部辞书入典。现为中国美术家协会会员，原美协山东分会理事、中国书法家协会山东分会理事，山东画院高级画师，山东省高等学校书画家协会副主席，山东华胄艺术研究院院长，山东齐白石艺术研究院常务副院长，国务院特殊津帖获得者，全国高等学校工业设计学会理事。
1939年8月8日生，原山东轻工业学院（现更名为“齐鲁工业大学”）艺术设计系主任。中国美术家协会会员，山东省高等学校书画研究会副主席，山东齐白石艺术研究院院长。
1972年发起创办山东省轻工美术学校；1982年在山东轻工业学院创办艺术设计系，填补了我省高等设计教育的空白，是我省设计艺术教育的开拓者和奠基人之一。为了表彰吴玉田同志“为发展我国高等教育事业做出的突出贡献”，1992年享受国务院政府特殊津贴。
作为设计艺术的龙头院校，在院党委的领导下，吴玉田教授审时度势，使设计教育不断深化，几项举措可谓山东乃至全国设计教育之最：
1984年成立了中国包装函授学院山东分院；
1985年开办了首届包装装潢干部专修科，培养了一批设计精英；
1987年举办了我省首届包装装潢设计展，省委书记梁步庭，省长姜春云莅临指导，并给予高度评价；
1987年开办包装装潢师资班，为设计教育培养专业人才；
1989年率先主持试行“两段制教育改革”，将竞争机制引入高等设计教育属全国首例。《装饰》杂志主编闻讯专访，并发表吴玉田主任撰写的《两段制教育改革——山东轻工业学院装潢设计专业改革》一文，引起了社会的强烈反响；
1990年在泰安举办了全国第一个乡镇企业装潢设计大专班；
1993年经国家教委批准，主考山东省“设计艺术”自学考试，这是山东唯一授权的主考院校。
2012年开始与其子吴震筹建“山东华胄艺术研究院”，并得到众多老艺术家的大力支持与鼎力相助，并与2013年初成立。该研究院以发掘传统文化、弘扬国粹精华、培养艺术人才为目标和责任，希望为山东这个文化大省贡献力量。
积几十年的办学经历，吴玉田教授确立了设计教育的办学宗旨和培养目标：
坚持党的基本路线，坚持党的教育方针、文艺方针和社会主义办学方向。按照“面向世界，面向未来，面向现代化”的要求，以“诚信、笃学、躬行、至爱”为规范，探索培养艺术人才的新方法，实行全方位设计教育，加实践性环节，造就一专多能和多能一专的“复合型人才”。
吴玉田教授是一位德艺双馨的教育家，在教学工作中成绩突出，1999年被授予“山东轻工业学院教学标兵”。他实施“全方位设计教育”取得可喜成果。《中国包装》杂志进行了专访，并以整版的篇副刊登了学生的优秀设计作品，发表了他本人撰写的《全方位设计教育实践性环节的作用》一文，扩大了山东设计教育在国内外的影响。
作为双肩挑的吴玉田同志，科研成果甚丰，出版有《商标设计战略》、《中国画的笔墨情趣》、《新编山水画法》、《吴玉田画集》、《吴玉田诗集》、《吴玉田文集》等著作。
吴玉田教授设计的邮筒在邮电部全国征集邮政信筒设计中标；承担了中国第一部总统专列（工务动车）的设计项目；为山东电视台设计的台标一直应用30余年。
