毕业于中央工艺美术学院（现清华大学美术学院）。1991年起留校任教、任《设计》杂志执行编辑。曾任北京奥组委文化活动部景观规划实施处处长、国家大剧院艺术品部部长。
中国美术家协会会员，中国美术家协会工业设计艺术委员会秘书长；中国包装联合会设计委员会副秘书长。中国工艺美术学会纤维艺术委员会副会长，清华大学张仃艺术研究中心副秘书长，北京工业设计促进会副理事长，民盟中央文化委员会委员、民盟北京市委文化委员会副主任。中央文化干部管理学院艺术学院等院校客座教授，北京市文化创意产业基金专家库成员，文化部十二五文化产业规划课题组成员。
曾获日本平山郁夫奖、获“中国之星”最佳设计奖、荣获中国优秀品牌形象设计奖及金手指奖、荣获中国设计贡献奖银奖。2008年荣获北京市委、市政府、奥组委授予的“北京奥运会先进个人”荣誉称号。获中国包装设计事业突出贡献奖；获中国广告设计风云榜最具影响力平面设计师奖。主持设计的《美丽的奥林匹克文化长卷》荣获2012香港印制大奖优异奖和2013中华印制大奖全场大奖。
曾主持策划设计中国一汽、伊利集团、中信公司、中国优秀旅游城市等百余项品牌形象、活动推广、策划设计和城市形象景观推广策划项目。水墨画作参加中国水墨计画展。策展“光宇风格”张光宇设计展、北京国际设计周“手作之美”设计展、曾凡恕画迹展、上海艺术设计展“手工之城”设计展、设计为民生“12间”设计展等艺术设计展。
出版《设计的故事》、《中国艺术美学散论》等书、在装饰、美术观察等专业期刊和报刊上发表中国现代设计的理论导向、创意设计产业的设计管理、北京奥运会形象景观与公共艺术、现代手工设计等百余篇艺术设计论文、评论。
