1931年11月出生，山东阳谷人，1947年始先后在山东济南私立中国艺术专科学校、北平国立艺专附设画室学绘画。1949年8月入伍在第一野战军战斗剧社美术队人事美术工作。
1952年4月调入八一电影制片厂，故事片室任美术设计数十部。如《战斗里成长》、《柳堡的故事》、《英雄虎胆》、《海鹰》、《槐树庄》、《农奴》、《苦菜花》、《红灯记》、《红色娘子军》、《平原作战》（以上三部均与人合作）、《雷锋之歌》、《归心似箭》、《今夜星光灿烂》、《月光下的小屋》、《敦煌》（中方美术监督）、《农奴》等。其中：《槐树庄》、《归心似箭》、《布谷催春》（与人合作）获文化部优秀影片奖，《月光下的小屋》获印度儿童片奖，《农奴》获马尼拉电影节金鹰奖。
1985年为日本协拍影片《敦煌》担任中方美术监督。现正负责战争历史巨片《大决战》的美术设计工作。他除了担任本职工作外，还画过大量电影宣传画、连环画并改编过电影剧本。现为中国电影家协会理事、中国美术家协会会员、中国电影美术学会副会长。
