1953年生于江苏南通，江西彭泽人，艺术学博士。
1984－1987南京艺术学院毕业获硕士学位，留校任教，
1988－1991南京艺术学院获博士学位。
1991－1992日本爱知县立艺术大学研修。
1992－1999年先后聘为南京艺术学院设计艺术系史论教研室主任、系主任、设计学院院长。
2002年调入中央美术学院，现任设计学院副院长，教授，博士生导师。兼任中央美术学院奥林匹克艺术研究中心副主任，中央美术学院设计文化与政策研究所所长，中国美术家协会工业设计艺术委员会副主任，中国工业设计协会常务理事，中国民间工艺专业委员会副主任委员；第九、第十届全国美展艺术设计展评审委员，第五届中国工艺美术大师评审委员，日本千叶大学工学部高级访问学者。
曾出版《视野与边界》（个人文集，江苏美术出版社，2004）、《绿色设计》（合著，江苏美术出版社，2001）、《造物之门》（个人文集，陕西人民美术出版社，1998）、《中国民间工艺》（专著，浙江教育出版社，1995）、《馈赠礼俗》（专著，中国华侨出版公司，1991）以及主编《未建成/建成--矶崎新建筑艺术》（中国视界艺术出版社，2004）等，参加《中国工业设计全书》（江苏科技出版社，1996）、《中国招幌辞典》（上海辞书出版社，2001）、《设计艺术教育大事典》（山东教育出版社，2001）等大型工具书编撰，并在国内外发表学术论文百余篇。2004年完成《中国工业设计产业发展政策研究》；2005年主持《DRC--北京工业设计资源协作中心方案研究》课题；2006年主持完成《关于北京市加强设计创意人才政策的调研报告》课题。
