　　“戊戌”是清乾隆四十三年（1778年），钱楷时年约18岁。

　　图绘紫、红、白诸色菊花争芳斗艳的秋景。冷暖色调相互映衬，画面鲜亮明快。菊花为双勾填色，在极工中求意趣。叶为没骨晕染，不用笔勾线，直接上色点染，具有典型的恽氏没骨画风。此图右侧书录的是恽寿平的七言诗，其字的结体完全学恽氏的笔法，即在宗法唐褚遂良书风的基础上，得纤疏清逸的意趣，从而与其高雅秀迈的画风相得益彰。由此图可见，钱楷早年时学仿恽寿平的书风和画法，已达到惟妙惟肖的地步，正如裱边惠孝同题：“此扇字画具仿南田，是能得瓯香二昧者。”
