The author, Zhang Qi (the year of birth and death is unknown), mainly took part in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. He was also a Jade Ke, a native of Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. Being good at portrait painting and passing on Zeng whale law, he is an important member of the Bochen School. There are few works handed down from generation to generation. At present, there are only two axes in China, namely, the "Round Letter Image" collected by the Palace Museum and the "Shang You Tu" collected by the Shanghai Museum in cooperation with Xiang Shengmo. As the monk Huang Bizong brought Zhang Qi's portrait painting into Japan, the "Bochen School" painting was introduced into the country, which had a certain impact on the style of Japanese portrait painting.
The axis of Yuanxin Image, 1643 in Chongzhen, Ming Dynasty, is painted by Zhang Qi, silk and colored, 129.7cm in length and 78.8cm in breadth.
This picture shows the Buddhist monk Yuanxin sitting image. The middle section on the left side of this picture reads: "Before winter, embroidered disciple Zhang Qijing wrote." Xiajun's "Zhang Qi's Seal" and "Yukeshi" seals are printed on two sides. There are Yuanxin's self-inscribed praise in Shangshitang, and the Department of Section: "On the eighth day of the winter before the end of the Gong Dynasty, we praise ourselves; on the eighth day of the winter, we show Xitang, Xingshan, Jingshan, and seventy-three annotations by the green lion Weng." The painting and the title are the same year, according to which Gui was not regarded as the 16th year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty (1643).
The picture shows Master Yuanxin at the age of 73, dressed in ochre monk's clothes, wearing red robes, holding the dust in his right hand, naturally placing his left hand in his abdomen and sitting in a chair. Hair shawl, clear appearance, clear facial contour, strong concave and convex feeling, with color and ink rendering, almost no trace of lines, very vivid performance. In the works of Zeng Whale, the founder of the Bochen School, only the subtle depiction of the characters'faces is generally emphasized. In this work of the Bochen School painters, clothing and props are all very fine, which shows Zhang Qi's deep skill in painting.
