居节(约1524—约1585),明代书画家。字士贞,一作贞士,号商谷、西昌逸士,吴州(治今江苏苏州)人。少从文徵明游,书、画为入室弟子。山水画法简远,有宋人之风。家本业织,籍隶织局,受织监孙隆诬陷,被拘系破家,晚年僦居虎丘南村,屋数椽,萧然自适,或绝粮,则旦起写《疎松远岫》一幅,令童子易米以炊,年六十,竟以穷死。后人珍视其画,认为可与朱朗、侯懋功相颉颃。能诗,著有《牧豕集》。

雨洗千山出,氤氲绿满空。开门飞燕子,吹面落花风。
野色行人外,经声流水中。因来问茶事,不觉过云东。

何处闻清磬,春云度半塘。茶香连小院,楼影带修廊。
不染莲花净,闲贪佛日长。晚山如有意,飞翠满绳床。

湘君庙下鹧鸪啼,芳草王孙去路迷。春水看消巴蜀雪,桃花游遍武陵溪。

此图自题“戏墨”,当属居节自娱自乐之作。图中兰、竹笔力劲健,不乏灵动。山石以枯笔勾轮廓,干笔皴擦石面,显现出坚实方硬的质感。在秀雅中含有一种凛然难犯的韵味,反映了画如其人。居节是位注重气节的画家,其人品犹如坚硬的石品和清雅自得的兰、竹之品。他曾因刚直不阿的倔强性格,受到织监孙隆的诬陷,但是他无怨无悔,始终以笔墨丹青遣兴抒怀,最后竟以穷死。

图绘一丛幽兰,兰叶左右纷披,兰花上仰下垂,表现出自然天成的意趣。全图以中锋行笔,润泽劲健的笔墨风格极近文徵明,兰叶用笔舒展流畅,穿插有序,疏放得体;兰花隽秀清怡,给人以清高拔俗的美感。画幅正中有今燕题诗,落款:“留别元凯兄北上。今燕写。”今燕本姓赵,名彩姬,字今燕,是位名冠北里的明代南院妓女。由此可见居节的画作被时人喜爱,甚至被妓家作为与友人离别的赠品。
