　　此图选取水景局部：一丛芦苇蓼草探入画面，枝叶稀疏，叶留残雪。一对鸳鸯破水而行，游向苇丛。一只鹡鸰轻栖于苇杆，与俯冲而下的另一只遥相呼应。画面中、上部大片空白，使人联想到广阔水域的浩渺烟波，在构图上颇得小景见大之妙。

　　画面构图简洁疏朗，浸透出丝丝寒意。气氛祥和宁静，寓意寒不异心。画家仅在鸳鸯游曳处画出几笔水波纹，既表现出鸳鸯的动感，又反映出水面的荡漾。在以鸳鸯为主题创造出安谧幸福的情境之余，又添绘相呼相随的小鸟二只，它们的顾盼关系使得上半部画面更加充实生动。

　　芦苇用墨双勾，笔触挺拔劲健。禽鸟体形虽小，但一笔不苟，清晰工致，功力非凡。
