明书画家、藏书家。字用嘉，号东原，自号鹿冠道人、东原耕者、延绿亭主人。晚年居于东原，学者称“东原先生”，私谥渊孝先生。吴县（今江苏苏州）人。博学能诗文，工于画山水，笔墨苍秀遒劲，开吴门画派先声，代表作有《友松图》、《南湖草堂图》等。性淡泊，荐举皆辞不就，博纵古今。喜收藏，有藏书画处为“延绿亭”。钱谦益在其《列朝诗传》中记其：明初和南原俞琰、笠泽虞堪、庐山陈继先称为四大收藏家。人称景泰以后，俊民秀才、汲古多藏，以杜东原为首。家有“三友轩”，藏书、作画其中。著有《东原集》、《纪善录》、《耕余杂录》等。
       传世作品有正统八年（1443）前作《南村别墅图册》十页、天顺七年（1463）作《天香书屋图》轴，现均藏上海博物馆；景泰五年（1454）作《山水图》轴、成化八年（1472）为吴宽作《山水图》轴及《友松图》卷等，均藏故宫博物院；正编印八年作《听泉图》轴、成化四年作《师林图》轴藏台北故宫博物院；成化三年（1467）作《墨笔山水》轴藏四川省博物馆。著有《东原斋集》等。

白发慵梳不裹巾，高斋无语独伤神。忧君谁似监门女，匡世难求筑版人。

红尘道上马纷纷，延绿亭中杳不闻。日转长林移树影，雨余芳径长苔纹。
闲吟自策青藜杖，高卧谁书白练裙。寡过末能身易老，此生惟恐负斯文。

苕溪秋高水初落，菱花已老菱生角。红裙绿髻谁家人，小艇如梭不停泊。
三三两两共采菱，纤纤十指寒如冰。不怕指寒并刺损，只恐归家无斗升。
湖州人家风俗美，男解耕田女丝枲。采菱郎是采桑人，又与家中助生理。
落日青山敛暮烟，湖波十里镜中天。清歌一曲循归路，不似耶溪唱采莲。
