程嘉燧，寓杭州后居嘉定(今属上海市)，晚居虞山(今江苏常熟)，崇祯十四年(1641)还休宁，归老于歙。卒年七十九。钱谦益诔之曰：“松圆诗老”。工诗，兼精音律，善制松烟黑墨。少年科举不成曾学剑，后刻意读书，极为钱谦益推重。其论诗主张先立人格，再立诗格，反对前后七子摹拟之风，当时被人称为“一代宗主”、“晚明一大家”。
       亦工山水，宗倪瓒、黄公望，画花卉沉静恬淡，格韵并胜，笔墨枯淡，偏于闲静。与李永昌属天都派，亦为新安派先驱，吴梅村把他称为“画中九友之一”，与同里唐时升、娄坚称“练川三老”，与李流芳为诗画友，后人把他与唐时升、娄坚、李流芳合称“嘉定四先生”。
