吴应贞,生卒年不详,字含五,江苏吴江人,嫁同邑赵氏。工写生花鸟画,宗法清恽寿平的“没骨”画风而有所变格。“没骨”相传为南朝梁张僧繇首创,经北宋徐崇嗣承袭,以色、墨遮隐去淡墨细勒的线条。至清代恽寿平、唐于光对它又有所发展,即完全不用线条勾勒而是直接用色、墨点染出物象。恽氏的这种直接点染的画风在清代花鸟画坛上影响很大,它很快便成了清代女性画家在花鸟画创作上最大的典范,除恽氏家族的女性后裔画家恽冰、恽青、恽怀英等人承袭此法外,其她的女性画家如吴应贞、李珏、毛周、吴玖等亦纷纷以没骨法进行创作。

款题“庚子桂月写,延州内史。”钤“吴氏应贞”、“一字含五”印。此图的表现技法是从清恽寿平的没骨花卉画脱变而出。花、叶的线条工细而不呆板,敷色艳丽而不浓腻,工致的晕染表现出花、叶含水带露的鲜活与生动,清逸秀爽之气荡于笔墨间。
