生于嘉庆六年十二月二十六日（1802年1月29日），逝于道光三十年十一月初一（1850年12月4日）。其父费宗骞擅画山水。丹旭少时便得家传，后浪游于江浙闽山水间，与画家冯箕、倪士惠、汤贻汾、张熊，鉴赏家张廷济等均有往来。肖像画独具一格。工写照，亦作花卉山水，如镜取影，尤精补景仕女，秀润素淡，潇洒自然，格调柔弱，用笔流利，轻灵洒脱，有“费派”之称。兼工山水、花卉，以清灵雅澹之笔出之。偶作诗词，亦如其画。工书法，书法恽寿平，有韵致。一生为家计所累，卖画于江浙两省，上海、杭州、苏州一带，寓杭州最久。常流寓于汪远孙、蒋百煦等人之家，以绘画供人玩赏。道咸（1821—1850）间曾寓沪鬻画，卒年四十九。著有《依旧草堂遗稿》1卷。事迹收录于《墨林今话》、《海上墨林》、《桐阴论画》、《清画家诗史》。

现存《东轩吟社图》、《果园感旧图》、《负米图》、《执扇倚秋图》等作品，代表其人物画之特色。《东轩吟社图》描绘20多位东轩诗社社友群像，吟诗论文，对人物不同性格、特征作细致刻画，为精湛之作。其与冯箕、倪巽甫等合作之《雪景山水册》被收入文物出版社1993年第1版《中国古代书画图目》第十二册，《中国古代书画鉴定实录》。
