明亡之际,黄媛介与其夫杨世功为躲避战乱不得不背井离乡,在江南的吴越间四处飘泊,颠沛流离的生活令黄氏居无定所,难得安逸。但是,这种生活也给其艺术的发展创造了难得的机会,无论是流徙途中的亲身经历,还是所见所闻的自然景观,都丰富了她的写作和画作的素材,使得她比一般女性有更多的机会云游自然山水,从中获得创作灵感,促使其山水画日臻成熟。
