自题:“渝州六月,谢兄稚柳为我补栩栩之蝶,中国文艺社窗前景色。酷暑无聊写此遣兴。悲鸿。”画幅右下角钤“洗□清玩”朱文方印。
此图是徐悲鸿与谢稚柳联手创作的遣兴之作。谢稚柳(1910-1997年),字壮暮,能书擅画,并精于书画理论和鉴定。抗日战争期间,谢稚柳流寓重庆,与徐悲鸿同为中央大学艺术系教授和中国文艺社会员。中国文艺社建于抗战时期重庆的观音岩,主持人是华林先生。当时社内聚集了一批富有才华的进步画家。1945年,谢稚柳经著名画家张大千介绍与徐悲鸿相识。徐氏对谢稚柳的博学和才华颇为赞许。
图绘炎炎夏日,梧桐叶宽大肥厚,交叠连荫,一只长毛猫透过叶片的缝隙发现正在休憩的彩蝶,顽皮的它蹑手蹑脚,急欲捉蝶。画面情节生动,富有情趣。
图中梧桐叶的刻画很有特点,先以断断续续的墨线勾边,再以饱含花青与黄、绿的混合色晕染叶面,并趁湿绘叶的茎脉。勾勒与渲染浑然一体,水与色、墨交融生辉,成功地表现出叶片轻盈润泽的质感。

This picture was created by Xu Beihong and Xie Zhiliu. Xie Zhiliu (1910-1997), with strong characters, is good at painting and calligraphy, and is skilled in the theory and appraisal of painting and calligraphy. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Xie Zhiliu lived in Chongqing and joined Xu Beihong as a professor in the Art Department of Central University and a member of the Chinese Literature and Art Society. The Chinese Art Society was founded in Guanyinyan, Chongqing during the Anti-Japanese War. The host was Mr. Hua Lin. At that time, a group of talented progressive painters gathered in the society. In 1945, Xie Zhiliu was introduced to Xu Beihong by Zhang Daqian, a famous painter. Xu praised Xie Zhiliu's erudition and talent.
Pictured in hot summer, the leaves of plane trees are broad and thick, overlapping and shady. A long-haired cat finds a resting butterfly through the gap of the leaves. Naughty cat creeps and eagerly catches butterflies. The plot is vivid and interesting.
Firstly, the leaves of Chinese parasol trees are delineated with intermittent ink lines, then the leaves are dyed with a mixture of blue, yellow and green, and the stems of the leaves are painted while they are wet. Drawing and rendering are integrated, water and color, ink blend and shine, successfully showing the light and lustrous texture of the leaves.
