Spence, was born in Kent, and learning in the first art training school in South kensington. He showed his work at the Paris salon, but most of his exhibitions were in the uk. In 1892 and in 1958 he exhibited more than and 30 paintings at the Royal Academy, including "why the war" (), which  won the Royal Academy "annual picture". He was also a founding member of the miniature painter of the Royal Society, where he exhibited a microcosm of 129 between 1896 and 1954.
Many of his subjects are scenes of the country, with almost the same details as the picture, such as the "laughing priest" (1935) and "his daily quota" (1946).  he also painted still life themes, including "apple" (1951).
Lech Spence is one of the most love that queen Marie is an avid collector of his work. In 1924, he painted a miniature of King George V of the Queen's doll house.
In December 17, 2009, Spence, the masterpiece "the old dealer" sold at auction at Sotheby's by more than 345000.
