1941年　生于河北涿州拒马河畔乡村。
1958年　考入中央美术学院附中.
1961年毕业，同年考入中央美术学院版画系。
1966年　从中央美术学院版画系毕业。
1973年　分配到中国人民解放军昆明军区美术组工作。
1980年　加入中国美术家协会。偕同丁绍光、王晋元等创办云南“申社”画会，参加“申社首届画展”。
1982年　调河北画院任专职画家。
1986年　当选为中国版画家协会理事。
1993年　评为国家一级美术师。后受聘任河北美术家协会创作委员会副主任。
1999年　荣获《鲁迅版画奖》，出版《王天任版画集》。作品多次参加国内外美
术大展，其中数件作品获奖，并为多家美术馆收藏。
