安徽马鞍山市人，毕业于安徽省教育学院美术系，现为美术研究员。中国美术家协会会员、中国摄影家协会会员，珠海中国城市山水画研究会会长。八十年代至今，一直致力于现代城市山水画的创作与研究，创作出一批颇具影响力的现代城市山水画作品，并多次举办大型个展。其大型现代城市山水画册《珠海百美图》1997年由人民美术出版社出版发行、《今日澳门》2004年由澳门基金会出版发行。多次参加文化部、中国美术家协会等国家级机构举办的大型活动。其代表作品有《南国明珠》、《海湾秀色》、《纵览夜色更灿烂》、《东方大地》、《帕米尔雪山雄姿》、《漓江山水天下秀》等等。多幅作品被多个国家和海内外专业机构收藏。
书画大师王琦对刘原的城市山水画创作寄予了厚望，并作楹联一幅：“创现代城市山水，画万里江山锦绣”。在山水画创作的基础上，刘原独辟蹊径，进行了20多年的城市山水画研究，被业内权威人士誉为城市山水画的领军人物。
