伍蠡甫（1900.9-1992.10）广东新会麦园乡人（现属江门市外海镇麦园村）。出生于清朝光绪二十六年。其父伍光建是一位卓越的外国文学翻译家（见《熠熠文星》首卷23页）。伍蠡甫也是我国当代著名的翻译家、美术理论家、西方文论专家、文学家、国画家，一生著述写作，教书育人，与其父伍光建被称为“中国译坛双子星”。1992年，伍蠡甫与世长辞，终年九十二岁。
伍蠡甫笔名“敬庵”，先后就读于北京汇文附小、上海青年会中学、—E海圣约翰大学附中、复旦大学等校。
既有家学渊源，加之天资聪颖，以优异成绩留学英国，入伦敦大学攻读，在这所举世闻名的学府中，伍蠡甫潜心治学，广涉外国名著，涉猎西方文学理论。学成归国后，历任上海复旦大学教授兼文学院院长、外国文学系主任，同时从事外国文学翻译工作。
三、四十年代，伍蠡甫还被中国公学、暨南大学等聘为外文系教授，并任黎明书局副总编辑，主编《世界文学》杂志双月刊，主持编辑出版《西洋文学名著丛书》和宣传中外学术的《文摘》，曾被北京故宫博物院聘为顾问，又担任国际笔会中国分会秘书。
伍蠡甫早在英国伦敦大学攻读时，已立志为国人介绍西学、引进名著读物，并拟定了翻译名著大纲，回国时甘愿舍料。回国后，他先后翻译出版了俄罗斯大文豪高尔基的作品《文化与文明》(大时代书局出版发行)；《苏联文学诸问题》(开明书局出版)；德国歌德的《威廉的修业时代》(节译本，黎明书局出版)；法国卢梭的《新哀绿绮恩》(节译本，黎明书局出版)；《瑞典短篇小说选》(商务印书局出版)等等。
解放后，伍蠡甫一直在复旦大学任教，曾任该校外文系教授兼外国文学研究室主任。后任复旦大学文艺批评教授、硕士研究生和博士研究生导师。
1949年以后，伍蠡甫先后翻译出版了《哈代短篇小说集》、《雪莱诗辩》。1963年至1964年，他响应上级指示，组织了多名专家学者编写《西方文论选》(上、下两卷)，这是中国首次进行关于西方文论的研究编著，该书出版后，用作高等学校外国文学专业学习用的教科书，对推动西方文学的深层研究起着积极的作用。
1966年，“文化大革命”爆发，伍蠡甫难逃劫运，被打成“反动学术权威”，扣上了“宣传资产阶级观点”、“美化资产阶级文学”的罪名，宣布他的著作《西方文论选》为大毒草。他生平珍藏的一大批名家字画、古玩之物被抢掠去，留学英伦时期苦心搜购的西方文学名著和原版外文资料亦在这场劫难中散失殆尽。经历了十年动乱之后，伍蠡甫得到落实政策，重返工作岗位，他的研究成果又得到承认和推广。
八十年代后，他除了担任复旦大学文艺批评教授外，还肩负一系列社会职务：上海画院兼职画师、全国外国文学会顾问、中华全国美学会顾问、上海比较文学研究会顾问、《大百科全书?外国文学卷》、《大百科全书?中国文学卷》编委，《辞海》编委，以及外国文学、美术科主编，并光荣当选为上海市文联、上海笔会的成员之一，上海市社会科学联合会的理事。1985年，伍蠡甫主编出版有《山水与美学》(上海文艺出版社出版)；《中国美术辞典》(伍蠡甫任副主编，上海辞书出版社出版)；与夏仲翼合编《欧洲文论简史》。八十年代中后期，伍蠡甫主要从事西方文论研究工作，写作《欧洲文论简史——古希腊罗马至十九世纪末》一书(1985年由人民文学出版社出版)，此书出版后，引起学术界极大关注。此外，伍蠡甫晚年还著撰出版了多本艺术理论专著：《访艺录》、《中国画论研究》、《伍蠡甫艺术美学文集》。伍蠡甫又是蜚声艺坛的美术鉴赏家和国画大师。他是岭南画派创始人之一.
伍蠡甫通过对中西绘画和画论的研究，逐渐感到现代西方美学，尤其是后印象派舍“再现”而取“表现”，强调画中有“我”，实与国画“外师造化，中得心源”的优良传统，殊途而同归。他以为对中西绘画美学的比较研究，实为一项重要工作，因而他在这方面用了很大的功夫。他在山水画创作上，力求写生而不忘创意，注重“丘壑内营”，表达画家的真情实感和思想境界，富有学养和书卷气，曾多次在国内外举行个人画展。作品出版有《伍蠡甫山水画辑》，论著有《谈艺录》、《中国画论研究》、《伍蠡甫艺术美学文集》、《名画家论》，并主编《中国名画欣赏辞典》、《山水与美学》。同时，在教学领域开系统研究西方文论之先河，撰有《欧洲文论简史》，并主编《西方文论选》、《现代西方文论选》等。
