生于哈尔滨市。1978年考入鲁迅美术学院中国画系，1982年毕业，1989年在中央美术学院国画系结业。曾任黑龙江省画院副院长、黑龙江省美术家协会副主席、黑龙江省人大常委。现为中国国家画院副院长、艺术院委员会秘书长，一级美术师、中国美术家协会会员、全国青联委员、中国画学会理事、上海中国画院特聘画师，国务院特殊津贴专家。
作品曾获“全国庆祝建军60周年美展”金奖、“中国首届工笔山水画展”金叉奖、“全国山水首届画展”铜奖、“第八届全国美展”、“第十届全国美展”优秀作品奖。1997年被中国文联评为“中国画坛百杰”，曾获“徐悲鸿美术奖”、“黄宾虹奖”。2004年被评为“黑龙江省德艺双馨艺术家”。曾举办6次个人画展，出版17本个人画集。

赴黑龙江省双鸭山煤矿体验生活、写生并创作矿工题材《开拓者》。与同学陈苏平在沈阳创作连环画《叔侄巧相逢》。参加黑龙江省国画作品展；

赴南京、青岛、沈阳考察学习。创作连环画《古河道》并发表于《富春江画报》。作品《矿工》、《牧马人》、《行旅》参加黑龙江省第六届美展，获一等奖、二等奖；

与戴辉在哈尔滨结婚。与画家卢禹舜、关玉良、王俊珠、富中奇共同成立“关东画友会”，举办关东画友会国画作品展。与仲伟生合作创作抗联历史画《岁月深处的队列》；
1987年

借调到北京外国语学院德语系中德专家组工作九个月，为中国德语教材画插图。在北京画店举办个人画展。加入中国美术家协会；

1992年

1993年
任黑龙江省画院创研部主任、二级美术师。由卢禹舜发起，与其共同组建的“黑龙江省中华文化发展基金会”在哈尔滨成立，任常务副会长兼秘书长，杨振宁先生任名誉会长，方毅为顾问。随黑龙江省画院赴四川考察、写生。创作工笔山水画《远方的云》，并参加中国美协主办的全国首届中国山水画展，获铜奖；
