黄秋园，字号名明琦，字秋园，号大觉子、半个僧、清风老人等，江西南昌人，名明琦，字秋园，号大觉子、半个僧、清风老人等。从未进过艺术学院深造及没有受过西画影响的业余画家。五十年创办南昌国画研究会，南昌书画之家。黄秋园山水画由传统入手，欲开创出个人风味强烈的画风。在他的山水世界里既没有南北之分，也没有文人、院体之别，他以“南人”的心境探秘，“北宗”的各种技法、技巧来陶冶“南人”的胸襟。南北宗的董源、郭熙、李成、王蒙、黄公望，“院体”的戴进、吴伟、马远、夏圭以及画家兼文人的倪瓒、石涛、石溪、龚贤等，无不在他的画中得到成功体现。晚年他独创了一种有别于历代名家的皴法新技法“秋园皴”，并编着有《中国山水画传统技法》一书。
藉于业余画家身份及孤介不媚时俗的个性，始终不为当时艺坛所接受。直到逝世多年后，他的画方才受到极力肯定。并受到当代吴作人、刘海粟、李可染、关山月、陆俨少、唐云、程十发等先生推崇。中央美术学院、中国画研究院分别追聘黄秋园为名誉教授、荣誉院委委员，1988年江西为其建立纪念馆。在人民美术出版社、台湾锦凎出版社联合出版的《中国巨匠美术周刊》中被列为自晋代、唐、宋、元、明、清至近现代的一百位中国美术巨匠之一。
