杨涵，男，1920年12月生，浙江温州人。1939年参加革命，1940年加入了浙江省战时木刻研究社木刻函授班，曾在浙南积极从事木刻运动。1943年参加新四军，曾先后担任新四军《苏中报》专职木刻创作员，《苏中画报》编辑、副主编，华中军区《江淮画报》编辑等，解放战争时期曾在华东野战军从事随军美术创作，代表作品《赔碗》，《修运河水闸》。此后，先后担任华东军区《华东战士画报》副主编，南京军区军史创作室负责人。1958年从部队转业到上海人民美术出版社，历任副社长、副总编、编审，1960年创作了木刻《淮海战役》，这件大幅木刻作品与创作于14年前的《赔碗》，《修运河水闸》一同奠定了杨涵在中国新兴版画50年进程中的重要地位。
数十年来，其作品曾多次参加国内、国际重要美展、版画展，多次赴国外展出，有多件作品被国内、国际有关机构与个人收藏。其藏书票作品多次荣获“全国书票展”特别荣誉奖。1991年中国美协和中国版协授予他“中国新兴版画杰出贡献奖”。专著有《杨涵山水画辑》、《新四军美术工作回忆录》、《杨涵木刻》、《榴花实诗抄》、《榴花实随笔》等。
