号天虚，别号天虚懒人，生于浙江义乌。早年毕业于浙江美术学院(现中国美院)，师从吴茀之，专攻花鸟，上追青藤、八大，近收昌硕、白石之精髓。其用笔逋峭古拙、雄浑苍劲，画作多为蕉荫、老松、栖禽、残菊。泼墨如掷，大笔或扫或拖，所到之处往往带来一股狂野之气，辟出一片豪迈意境，现代艺术大师李苦禅曾叹道：“伟山的画为真国画也，北国少有其才。”吴茀之先生则赞誉：“阿山画花能传神，画鸟枝上鸣。”

2001年2001年1月，应浙江横店集团之邀，“吴伟山巨型水墨画展”在横店国际商贸城展出，展馆面积约2000多平方米。
2001年作品被程思远、霍英东、邵华泽、王蒙、柴泽民、聂华苓、中国美术馆、陆维钊纪念馆、吴茀之艺术中心、严济慈图书馆、八大山人纪念馆、吴昌硕纪念馆、黄山慈光阁博物馆等收藏。
2005年1月由中国美术家协会苏州胥口展览中心主办吴伟山画展
