张道一，1932年11月出生。1952年毕业后任教于华东艺专，1953年至1957年先后跟随著名美术家陈之佛、庞薰琹研修图案和工艺美术史论，1958年任教于南京艺术学院。1994年1月调入东南大学，创建我国第一个艺术学系，并获艺术学博士点和博士后流动站。张道一教授是中国享受国务院政府特殊津贴的专家，长期潜心研究美术和工艺美术的历史及理论。

1956年赴北京，在刚刚成立不久的中央工艺美术学院工艺美术研究所跟随庞薰琹先生从事美术史论的研究。
1958年起任教于南京艺术学院。
1994年1月调往东南大学，创建我国第一个从人文科学角度综合研究艺术的艺术学系，该系获得了艺术学的硕士学位授予权、博士学位授予权和博士后流动站。
现为东南大学艺术学教授、博士生导师、博士后导师。苏州大学艺术学院院长。

曾荣获江苏省优秀教育工作者、优秀研究生教授称号、全国图书奖等。
2001年，全国优秀博士论文导师奖。
2005年，中国工艺美术学会颁发“中国工艺美术终身成就奖”。
曾任国务院学位委员会艺术学科评议组第二、三、四届成员和召集人，中华美学学会第四、五届副会长，江苏美学会第三、四、五届会长，江苏政协第六、七届委员。
