茹桂，中国书法家协会会员，陕西省书法家协会名誉主席，西安美术学院教授暨艺术理论硕士研究生导师，中华诗词学会理事，美国巴登鲁日市荣誉市长，“陶情寄意砚池春，无私有品自通神。华吐玉毫歌盛世，文扬正气净俗尘。”在中国书坛，长安茹桂的书法以其飘逸烂漫的格调、浓郁典雅的书卷气息为众人所熟知。

茹桂原名乐生，１９３６年生于长安。１９５３年入西北艺术学院中专部美术科学习绘画，１９５６年毕业留校任教；１９５９年考入陕西师范大学中文系，师从霍松林研习中国古典文学和艺术理论；１９６１年至今一直执教于西安美术学院，我国著名的书法家和书法理论家。西安美术学院教授、书法研究中心主任，陕西省书法家协会名誉主席，陕西省书法家协会顾问，陕西省政协委员，中国书协学术委员，日本京都造型艺术大学、艺术短期大学客座教授，美国世纪大学特聘艺术家，美国巴登鲁日市荣誉市长，日本全日书道教育协会名誉会长。

茹桂先后担任古典文学选读、艺术概论、美术评论、书法以及书法美学等课程的教学工作，坚持奉行“法由古授，美自我成”的艺术宗旨，在不断学习与吸收传统书法艺术美的同时，广泛采撷当代中外艺术精华，充分展示自己的才情与个性，取得了显著成果。先后担任古典文学选读、艺术概论、美术评论、书法史论以及书法美学等课程的教学工作，坚持奉行“法由古授，美自我成”的艺术宗旨，在不断学习与吸收传统书法艺术美的同时，广泛采撷当代中外艺术精华，充分展示自己的才情与个性，取得了显著成果。

茹桂长于行草书，取法二王及米芾，形成了自己雄健豪爽、恣肆跳宕的风格；尤其在行书创作上参合了国画甚至西画的技法，写来自然随意，纵横多变，或逆或顺，或中或侧，有方有圆，有重有轻，忽疾忽徐，时涩时畅，奇崛中见平易。我们通过欣赏他的行草书作品，完全可以领略到其中的意味——轻松、自然、快意、感情充沛、映带连绵，得到一种变幻莫测、目不暇接的感受。仔细观之，其结字中宫紧、外围纵，长短参差，粗细有别，神采飞扬，像一首诗，又如一幅画，入情入景，引人入胜。

被称为“学者型书法家”的茹桂，在书法理论方面亦著述甚丰。再版多次的《书法十讲》，系统地阐述了他的书法史论观和创作观，在书坛引起了较大反响。《关于书法美的思考》、《汉诗与中国书学》、《笔情 墨韵 诗魂》等论文，又从文化和美学的角度分析和论述了书法艺术创作的规律，为中国书法理论研究中文化观念的介入作了积极的探索。特别是他在《书法艺术的文化品位》中，以“书者，诗之余”、“流美者，人也”、“技巧，美学思维的组成部分”三部分为构架，在引经据典历数张旭、怀素、苏轼等人的“临池心态与创作过程”之后，写道：“这简直是一种自我燃烧，似乎每根神经、每个精神细胞都在跃动；若郢匠运斤、庖丁解牛，是一种得意忘形的惯性劳动，有心与无心之间的放任主义。”这一过程，又被他描画为“力的充盈、情的贯注、气的流畅”。

四十多年来，茹桂的作品曾参加陕西历届书法展以及第五届全国书法篆刻展等，发表艺术评论、散文诗词等二百五十多篇（首），曾先后应邀在日本的东京、京都、松田、行田、高松以及美国的世纪大学、巴登鲁日博物馆和新奥尔良等地举办个展或讲学。其作品被法国东方艺术研究所、菲律宾巴维士博物馆以及中国革命历史博物馆、毛主席纪念堂等处收藏，并在桥山黄帝陵、黄河碑林、湖北黄鹤楼等名胜地被镌刻勒石。

茹桂现为西安美术学院教授、硕士研究生导师，书法教育中心主任，陕西省书协名誉主席，中国书协学术委员，日本京都造型艺术大学、艺术短期大学客座教授，享受国务院有突出贡献专家特殊津贴。
