张守义1930年出生于河北平泉县，1954年毕业于中央美术学院绘画系。在一次采访中，张守义曾透露，他是因为爱书才开始做起图书装帧，没想到一干就是半个多世纪。“我就是为了看书，专业不对口我也去了(人民文学出版社)。”于是，自1956年起，张守义转行来到人民文学出版社担任书籍设计师，2003年直到退休，他没有换过一次工作。而鲜为人知的是，张守义因为胃部被切除大半，不易吸收普通饭菜的营养，所以多年来一直以啤酒代替饭进食，基本上一天3瓶，几乎啤酒不离手，成为业内有名的“酒仙”。
张守义从事书籍装帧设计40余年，《我的设计生活》一书，是近半个世纪艺术人生的精彩回眸。
张守义的装帧作品被誉为“舞矛亦舞盾，能舞又能文”，《装帧的话与画》是他的艺术心得。
《巴尔扎克全集》的封面设计，是张守义的得意之作。在汉译世界文学名著的封面设计上，张守义风格独树一帜，创造了“张守义品牌”。
张守义在当代书籍装帧艺术界享有国际声誉，他从事书籍装帧设计和美术编辑工作四十多年，创作了为数众多的装帧设计和插图，其作品具有简约传神、个性鲜明的风格，独树一帜的作品，顽强执著的艺术追求，1994年被英国剑桥大学入选《剑桥大学世界名人录》。几十年的执著追求，使他创作出一系列感人至深的作品，被人们尊称为“中国第一封面”。
著作有《张守义外国文学插图集》、《插图艺术欣赏》、《装帧艺术设计》等。装帧设计、插图创作多次获全国奖。中外作家肖像作品被世界各国作家纪念馆收藏。装帧设计、插图创作、作家肖像代表作品有：《茶花女》、《巴尔扎克全集》、《简·爱》、《悲惨世界》、鲁迅、歌德、托尔斯泰、泰戈尔、巴尔扎克、雨果等肖像。艺术成就载入《中国当代名人录》。主编艺术图书有《中国现代美术全集》插图卷等。
