袁庆一，湖南长沙人，1959年生，1982年毕业于中央戏剧学院舞台美术系。1982年与朋友一起成立了“湖南磊石油画研究会”，并于1982年和1984年举办了两次画展。这个期间袁庆一先后创作了《视》、《蓝色·酒杯》、《绳》等重要作品。1984年袁庆一的作品《春天来了》第一次亮相于湖南磊石油画研究会的画展上，同年入选在中国美术馆举办的“前进中的中国青年美术作品展览”，并获得鼓励奖。这件作品后来被美术史家誉为“85新潮”的代表作之一，在中国当代美术史上占有重要的一席之位。1985年袁庆一就职于湖南美术出版社，参与《画家》杂志的创刊工作。1987年，袁庆一创作了油画作品《烟灰缸》，同年入选在上海美术馆举办的“首届中国油画展”，此画被多本中国当代美术史书籍所收录。
1988年袁庆一东渡日本，专修平面设计，后就职于东京MOSadvertising设计公司。1994年移居法国，就职于巴黎PlanCréatif设计公司。1994年为RATP公司设计地铁和公交系列地图；1995年竞标法国BouyguesTelecom公司的LOGO设计，一举夺标；1999年就职于阿尔卡特公司手机部，设计手机的荧屏界面，以及图标、字体、动画；2002年袁庆一自立门户，为法国电信公司和橙子电视设计手机界面、电视界面、电脑界面。2009年他放弃了业已有成的设计事业，全力投入到绘画创作之中。
